The mind is a judging machine. We instinctively want more of what is good, less of what is bad, and can take or leave the neutral. It sounds pretty basic and absolutely necessary to live and survive.
But what happens when we judge a thought or emotion that we have as "bad" or "good"? Over time we become conditioned by our habitual responses to the good, the bad, and the neutral. Have a good thought - "I'm a good person"; have a bad thought - "I'm a bad person."
Our thoughts, emotions, and subsequent actions ride this see-saw all day, every day. Some days it can feel like an exhausting whirlwind, do you agree?
In mindfulness meditation practice, the most common reaction of people to finding that their mind wanders so easily is self-criticism.
Mindfulness practice is an opportunity and an invitation to pause from the up-and-down self-judgment and adopt a stance of calm, discerning self-compassion and curiosity. We become aware of this quality of non-judgmental awareness that we can begin to apply in our lives.
Join me today for more about non-judgmental awareness and guided meditation to cultivate this beneficial quality. I look forward to seeing you at 12:30pm EDT!
